Nasal Release Technique
in East Colorado Springs
If you’ve been dealing with lingering head pressure, headaches, breathing restrictions, TMJ tension, or post impact “something still feels off,” you may be missing a structural piece.
Nasal Release Technique (NRT) is a gentle, targeted method designed to support cranial alignment and reduce patterns of tension that can show up after head or facial trauma and chronic stress patterns. The technique uses a small nasal balloon device to create a precise release in the cranial sutures, including the sphenoid.

What Is the Nasal Release Technique?
Nasal Release Technique is a structural therapy developed by Dr. J. R. Stober (Portland). It is also known by related names like Cranial Facial Release, Endonasal Technique, Nasal Cranial Release, and Neurocranial ReStructuring Nasal Specific Technique.
NRT is designed to support the body by addressing cranial restrictions that may occur after head trauma or other strain patterns. The core idea is that when cranial bones and sutures are restricted, the body may compensate through posture, tension, pain patterns, or breathing changes.
Who May Benefit From Nasal Release Technique?
NRT is described as potentially helpful for a wide range of concerns, including:
- concussions and other head injuries
- migraines and headaches
- TMJ dysfunction
- breathing disorders including sleep apnea and snoring
- balance issues including vertigo
- chronic fatigue and fibromyalgia
- PTSD
At IYCS, we’ll review your history and symptoms to decide if NRT is appropriate for you and how it may fit into your overall care plan.
Important note: If you suspect a concussion or have new or worsening neurological symptoms, please seek medical evaluation promptly. NRT is not a substitute for emergency or specialty medical care.
How NRT Works
During NRT, a small finger cot attached to an inflatable bulb is carefully placed into the nasal passage. As the balloon gently inflates, it creates outward pressure against the bones lining the breathing passages, targeting cranial sutures (including the sphenoid).
This process is intended to help release cranial suture impactions and reduce forces that contribute to pain and dysfunction patterns.
What to Expect in a Session
NRT is performed with precision and care. In a typical session, the nasal balloon is lubricated and gently placed between the nasal turbinates, then slowly inflated. Many people describe:
- mild pressure (not sharp pain)
- a quick release sensation
- occasional clicking or popping as structures shift
After treatment, it’s common to notice changes in breathing, facial tension, head pressure, or overall ease. Results and pacing vary, and we tailor recommendations to your history and comfort.
Important Considerations and Safety
NRT is a powerful tool, but it is not for everyone. Certain contraindications, including:
- bleeding disorders
- prior facial bone surgery
We take a comprehensive health history before recommending NRT to support safety and ensure it’s the right choice.
Possible Side Effects
Most side effects are described as mild and temporary. Potential side effects noted include:
- nasal tenderness or minor soreness
- temporary throat irritation from increased sinus drainage
- infrequent headaches post treatment
- discomfort during the procedure
- possible nosebleed (epistaxis), though not common
We’ll walk you through what’s normal, what to watch for, and how to make the experience as comfortable as possible.

Training and Technique Lineage
NRT was developed by Dr. J. R. Stober and is taught through continuing education pathways, including the Conquer Concussion training community.
Conquer Concussion describes Cynthia Stein, M.Ed., PT as a leading authority who teaches the modality nationally and virtually and participates in educational initiatives related to the technique.
We chose to add Nasal Release Technique to our practice because there are specific symptom patterns I see where a structural cranial component may be part of what’s keeping someone “stuck” despite doing many of the right things. NRT is a precise tool that may help address cranial restriction patterns connected to breathing mechanics, jaw tension, head pressure, and post injury symptoms.
Our goal is to offer Colorado Springs clients an additional, evidence-informed option within a thoughtful care plan, with clear screening for safety, transparent expectations, and appropriate referral when needed.
